This message originated from Cambridgeshire
police but could occur in our area so please be aware
Please be aware of what appears to be a possible local scam.
Vehicles have recently, pulled up near to a vehicle whilst it
was reversing into a parking space ,blocking it in and then making
an allegation that their own vehicle had been damaged by the reversing
vehicle. It was clear that no damage had been caused, however
the driver then stated rather than go through insurance companies,
if 150 pounds was exchanged then it would be cheaper.
The reversing driver on this occasion had the foresight to see
that this was a possible scam, and did not hand over any money.
The blocking vehicles on this occasion were described as two
BMWs.
If in doubt regarding any such allegation of a collision on the
road, Call the Police to attend and assist. Local number 101,
or 999 for an emergency.
Police would be interested to hear of any similar incidents.

If you are concerned about having the catalytic
converter being stolen from your vehicle this event is worth consideration
and is a very quick process and FREE. The local policing team
are working hard to reduce theft of these valuable car components
and this a good initiative and deserves full support. It is open
to everyone so please pass on the details to your friends and
colleagues.
Good evening this is a Lincs Alert message from PCSO Harrington
of The Sutton's Neighbourhood Policing Team. Over recent months
there has been an increase in catalytic converter thefts, therefore
the local Neighbourhood Policing Teams have teamed up with a local
garage in Holbeach to offer people the chance to protect themselves
from theft for free. The idea is to engrave the number plate of
the vehicle onto the catalytic converter and this will only take
a few minutes.
People who have been victims of this crime before will be given
priority, along with those drivers who have 4x4s or vehicles that
sit high off the ground.
The local Neighbourhood Policing Team will be at the following
venue.
Grays of Holbeach Limited 25 Fen Road Holbeach
PE12 8QA between 09:00 and 17:00 on 11th May 2012.
If you wish to visit the above location please bring with you
a form of identification ie a driving licence and the V5c vehicle
document. Please do not contact the garage themselves.
We hope to see you there.

| Message from Lincolnshire Police
HQ Community Safety Department, Thursday, 15 March 2012.
Since Tuesday, 28 February 2012, a series of three distraction
burglaries have occurred in different parts of the county, where
a similar M.O. has been used by offenders.
Incident 1 - Ref Crime 32120009278
A burglary occurred at a dwelling on North Warren Road, Gainsborough
on Tues 28 February 2012 at 5pm. An unknown offender called at
the front door stating he had lost a ball in the rear garden and
was allowed to walk through the premises to the rear garden. The
offender was then allowed to re-enter the property alone, a purse
was found to be stolen from a drawer in the dining room The offender
said he would give the occupant his phone number to ring him back
if she found the ball
Incident 2 - Ref 32120010647
On Thurs 8 March 2012 at 10am an attempt distraction burglary
occurred on Albion Street, Crowland.
Two unknown males were seen walking in a residential area for
the elderly. A female resident heard a crashing sound in her kitchen
then saw a young male in the room after she had got up to look.
The offender was shown out of the property but introduced the
occupant to an older male who talked about 'looking for a missing
dog'. He asked the occupier for a pen so he could write his number
down, to be contacted if the dog was found. The younger male was
seen coming out of the house when the occupier went to fetch a
pen. Nothing has since been found stolen.
Incident 3 - Ref 32120010646
A distraction burglary was committed on Thurs, 8 March 2012, 12
noon at a dwelling on Station Road, Moulton, Spalding.
A male called at the front door and asked an elderly female resident
if he could go into the back garden to look for a ball. He was
followed by the resident. The offender asked for a piece of paper
to write down his telephone number. He would put the note through
the next door neighbours letterbox , to be phoned if the ball
was found. When the elderly lady returned inside she noticed her
handbag had been stolen from the living room.
Offenders described as approx 18 to 20 years, both slim build,
wearing football type tops, long sleeved with stripes, both clean
shaven. Male 1 blond hair, Male 2 mousey hair.

Please be aware that we are
currently experiencing concerns being raised by members of the public
regarding a company called Ideal Alarms Ltd cold calling by telephone
within the Lincolnshire region.
The company is offering low priced security alarms, which inflate
in price once you agree to a home visit.
The best course of action is to not enter into a conversation with
the company and just replace the telephone receiver.
If you do receive a home visit from this company, BY LAW the sales
representative MUST LEAVE your property when requested to do so
and if they refuse, this is an offence and you should call 999.
We have concerns that the sales technique is very aggressive and
may place vulnerable residents in a position where they may feel
unble to say no.
If you have been approached by this company, please let us know
by ringing 101 and provide further information, alternatively you
can contact Trading Standards on 01522 782341.
The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a free service. It is
the official central opt out register on which you can record your
preference not to receive unsolicited sales or marketing calls.
http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/mobile/index.html
Once your registered, if a company calls you, this is classed as
an offence and you should let Trading Standards know.

As a direct result of the BBC
Inside Out programme aired Monday 20 February 2012, Lincolnshire
Police has issued the following for information.
What is Lock snapping?
As the title would suggest this is where the door lock cylinder
is literally snapped into two by applying torque i.e. force to
the cylinder.
It is estimated that over 22 million doors across the UK could
be at risk from a method of attack where the lock cylinder can
be broken in just five seconds.
Although for obvious reasons the exact tools or methods used by
burglars to snap the Euro-Profile (or European Profile) style
cylinder should not be revealed, knowledge of how to do so is
widespread and has been increasingly used nationally.
Lincolnshire is one of the safest counties to live in. The numbers
of this method type of burglary is minimal compared to other areas.
This threat can be considerably reduced simply by upgrading the
cylinder to one that is specifically designed to prevent this
method of attack and we recommend that all vulnerable doors using
Euro-Profile cylinders be upgraded to incorporate Break
Secure cylinders.
Anti Snap Cylinders
Anti Snap cylinders, are specifically designed to combat the growing
threat of unauthorised entry whereby the criminals snap
the Euro-Profile style cylinder commonly fitted to most uPVC and
Patio doors.
Solution
A qualified locksmith can offer a full installation and upgrade
service to meet your needs; or a replacement anti snap euro cylinder
can be purchased from any recognised DIY store.
Check
Replacement lock cylinders should meet all parts of the exacting
British Standard Kitemark (BS EN 1303:2005) accreditation scheme.

Good morning - this is an Lincs
Alert message from PCSO Jane Gardner from Holbeach Neighbourhood
Policing Team. We are receiving reports again of thefts of catalytic
converters in the Holbeach area. Wignals gate has again been targeted.
Vehicles most likely to be hit are 4x4's as they are higher off
the ground making it easier for thieves to get under the vehicle.
Bare this in mind when you park on your drive. Don't make it easy
for thieves to access the underneath of the vehicle. We are still
receiving reports of shed break-ins in the Whaplode area. Again
most of these are thefts from insecure sheds. Please make sure your
shed is secured with a good quality padlock preferably with an alarm
fitted to it. If you have power tools or cycles in your shed make
sure these are marked up with your postcode and you make a note
of the serial numbers to assist us with tracing the items back to
you should you be a victim and we manage to recover your items.
Without you being able to identify recovered items as yours we may
have difficulty when it comes to challenging and prosecuting thieves.
We have a limited supply of simple shed alarms at Holbeach Police
Station. If you would like one then call in between 10am and 2pm
Monday to Friday they are free and available on a first come first
served basis. One final reminder please make sure your home looks
occupied when you are out. It is easy for us to spot an unoccupied
property as it gets darker in the late afternoon. If it is easy
for us to spot then it's easy for the thieves too. Timer switches
and low energy bulbs and relatively inexpensive and can be purchased
from hardware stores and supermarkets. By utilising these you will
be ensuring your property is far less likely to be targeted. If
you have any information in relation to the shed thefts and the
cat converter thefts then please call in on the non emergency number
which is simply '101'. Thank you.

December 2011
|
| 28 Dec: It was noticed this
morning that someone had destroyed the Christmas tree lights on
the tree outside the village hall.
Matt Harrison Electrical had sponsored them by supplying and
fitting them free of charge. They were certainly all right around
midnight on 26 Dec.
Incident number 271 on 28/12/11
|
| This vehicle was seen on New
Years Eve in Drawdyke Sutton St James a Vauxhall Vectra reg R468
APU - the people were hare coursing - please alert the police immediately
(tele 101) if you see the vehicle in similar circumstances. |
Hare Coursing in the fields
around this and other villages is a real problem and something that
the police take quite seriously. The problem for our police team
is that the hare coursers are very mobile and will only stay in
a field for a very short time before moving down the road; if they
are alerted to being watched and risk the police arriving then they
will abandon the dogs (ie. the evidence!) and collect them later
from another road. The police have urged everyone to be vigilant
and immediately send a report the police on 101 so that if a patrol
is in the locality then they have a chance of catching the coursers
"in the act" because this is the only way that a conviction
can be made and this sends a strong message that the community will
not tolerate hare coursing in this area.
If it is clear that an illegal activity is taking place then I believe
that NHW members and coordinators should circulate the details of
that vehicle immediately in order that as many people as possible
can be on the alert for its movements, this increases the possibility
of tracking its location to help the police catch up with it. Recently
our local police were able to apprehend hare coursers and make an
arrest but only after travelling between several villages following
reports from land owners.
Apart from the animal cruelty perspective the people hare coursing
are moving into this area from some considerable distance away and
invariably bring with them other criminal activity and the gambling
activity associated with it. Local landowners who have approached
hare coursers have frequently felt very intimidated with the attitude
and the police are unlikely to approach them unless they have some
backup - they are not to be trifled with!
With very best wishes for a Happy New Year |
Festive Holiday Period advice
Whilst many of us will be enjoying the festive period this year,
please take time to ensure you stay safe and secure at this time.
Out and about
Ensure you have a nominated driver if going to parties or social
evenings, it only takes one moment to get behind the wheel of your
car and you may be over the limit to drive without even realising.
Carelessness costs lives and affects all who may be involved in
a moment of reckless driving or accident.
As part of OPERATION BLACKWATER, extra patrols will be on the roads
and you may be stopped and asked to carryout a breathalyser test
at the roadside. Do not take the chance.
Property
If leaving your property unattended, ensure you invest in a timer
switch to ensure that your rooms look like they are occupied. You
can change the room with the timer regularly to alternate the pattern
of lights coming on.
Remember to draw curtains or blinds if you have presents on show
under your tree, this would be a nice easy target for a burglar
to know you have easily accessible presents to steal.
Vehicles
Remember to check that your vehicle lights are in working order,
should you find yourself in a snowstorm, fog or mist, your lights
may save your life to warn other drivers of your existence. Also,
ensure that your screen wash is topped up to clear vehicle spray
easily from your windscreen.
Cold Callers
Be extra aware of cold callers at this time of year, do not open
your door if you are not sure, keep the chain on and simply say
no to any unwanted visitors.
A big THANK YOU
We would like to thank all our registered members for your help
this year. With your continued assistance, we can work towards a
safer Lincolnshire.
Have a happy festive period and a safe and secure 2012.
PS - you may recall that we held a draw on the 16th December to
pick one lucky registered member to win a much sought after traffic
bear and the winner was Mrs F from the Deeping St James area.
Should you need to contact your local police over the festive period
please call us on non-emergency number 101 or in an emergency always
use 999.

It would appear that Hare Coursers are becoming more active once
again, a dark blue estate car vrm S74 UOX with 3 men and 3 dogs
was seen on the road between the village and Tydd St Mary on Monday
5th December. The police were informed and it is to be hoped that
our local officers will keep a close watch in the area whenever
they are patrolling. Arrests were made in November which should
give a clear message that the activity is not tolerated in this
area, however it has been reported that some hare coursers have
been offering landowners considerable sums of cash to allow the
activity on their land providing the police are not called - this
"sport" involves large sums of money being bet and the
individuals can be very ruthless so in all cases the police should
be summoned rather than approaching them direct.

This is a Lincs Alert message
from the Community Safety Department at Police HQ Nettleham.
Further to the Lincs Alert message sent on 07th October in relation
to Doorstep Crime week which took place from Monday 17th October
Friday 21st October.
We have been made aware yesterday on the 22nd November by members
of the public in the Sutton on Sea and Boston area of Lincolnshire
that an Alarm company is cold calling elderly residents
advising them that they are fitting alarms on behalf of the police
and promising police response to any alarm activations on the burglar
alarms they are selling.
This alarm company is then using hard selling tactics which include
unduly raising the fear of crime, pressure selling, unclear contracts
and overpriced security systems. These practices are illegal and
trading standards have been informed who have the powers to deal
with companies who behave in this manner. Please keep an eye on
elderly or vulnerable residents and make them aware of this Issue.
Please be aware that all alarm companies that fit alarms in our
county which have Police response to activations must be included
onto Lincolnshire Police compliant alarm company list and also be
registered with one of the two national inspectorate bodies which
are the NSI and the SSAIB. The alarm company that has been cold
calling in the Sutton on Sea and Boston area is not registered with
either of the Inspectorate bodies and are therefore not included
on the compliant alarm company list with Lincolnshire Police.
You can check if an alarm company is inspectorate approved by contacting
the NSI on telephone number 01628 637 512 (website: www.nsi.org.uk)
and the SSAIB on telephone number 0191 296 3242 (website: www.ssaib.org)
When investing in security systems for your home or business its
not advisable to deal with cold callers or telesales enquiries and
you should avoid doing doorstep or telephone business. Many traders
who call at your door are honest and genuine; however, some are
not and can be extremely persuasive.
If you have serious doubts about the legality or sales techniques
being employed by this type of Security Company, you should contact
Lincolnshire Trading Standards for advice on telephone number 01522

Maddan, NHWN Chair
To all Neighbourhood Watch and Home Watch members & coordinators
in England & Wales,
You cannot have failed to read in the papers or seen reports
on the television that there has been a staggering increase in
the number of metal thefts in the last year. I would encourage
ALL Neighbourhood Watch and Home Watch members to sign an online
e-petition, which would cause a parliamentary debate on the subject
of moving towards a cashless business model for scrap metal dealers.
You can sign the petition here: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/406
Many of these crimes would stop overnight if there was no ready
market for their ill-gotten gains. Ninety per cent of transactions
in scrap metal yards are by cash. Record-keeping is non-existant
and no questions are asked. Existing legislation is very weak
and goes back to the Scrap Metal Dealers Act of 1964. Maximum
fines are very low. A cashless model would be another step on
the route to effective legislation.
There will be exceptions to every model, but legislation which
gives robust powers to police and local authorities, accompanied
by powers of temporary closure given to Police Superintendents
and powers of closure and confication of assets given to magistrates,
will give legitimacy to genuine businesses and put the cowboys
out of business.
These heartless crimes have involved plaques from war memorials
and gravestones and the roofs from churches, as well as crimes
which have a huge impact on our everyday life, ranging from theft
of Network Rail cables, which cause massive disruption to the
travelling public, to BT cables which have caused the loss of
emergency care lines to sheltered housing schemes and the interruption
of communications systems to the fire, police and ambulance services
as well as the coastguards and RNLI.
Neighbourhood Watch and Home Watch members have a very important
role to play in tackling this abhorrent crime, by being alert
to every suspicious incident in their street and reporting these
incidents to the police. Those members who live in the vicinity
of Scrap Metal Dealers' yards should be extra vigilant and report
all suspicious movements.
Please sign the petition today at http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/406
and pass to your friends and neighbours, and put a stop to this
abhorrent crime once and for all.

LINCSALERT UPDATE
101 - The new Police Non-emergency number, why its a good
thing all round
The introduction of the new national 101 number for people to use
to contact the police for anything other than an emergency call
has caused some enquires for registered members to clarify details
regarding the new number.
Firstly the number 101 is a lot easier to remember than all the
different numbers for different police forces and you can dial the
same number anywhere in the country and it will put you through
to your nearest police force.
Research had suggested that more than half the people asked whether
they knew their local police non-emergency number could not remember
it so this has to be a better service for people. Do not worry the
other numbers will work too for some time yet but you might be missing
saving some money.
The fixed price of 15p for any length of 101 call means that for
the vast majority of people this will be cheaper than calls to the
old numbers. Some people were paying more than 15p per minute before,
so in these hard times that has to be a good thing!
It is worth mentioning as well that the police do not receive any
income or money from call charging but this great single national
call rate was negotiated with the Home Office, the police and the
telephone companies.
So please use the new 101 non-emergency number, its easier
to remember, it works anywhere in the country, its cheaper
for you and it will help us keep the 999 (free call) lines for emergencies.

Please be aware that a new
national non-emergency number 101 is being rolled out across the
country as part of a Home Office initiative. The number is now live
in Lincolnshire from today, Monday 7 November.
This means Lincolnshire Police now has just two main contact numbers
999 in an emergency and 101 in a non-emergency.
Please note that calls from landlines and mobile networks cost 15
pence per call, no matter what time of day or how long you are on
the phone. The service is available24 hours a day/ 7 days a week.
If a member of the public is deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired
they can:
textphone 18001 101.

| Two people have been cold calling
in Needham Drive in the village. They say they are from Dairy Crest
and are trying to enroll customers for a milk round. It was reported
that they were very persistent and were asking for commitment and
telephone numbers but appeared to have no local knowledge of the
village which raised some suspicion. Whilst this may be genuine
it is worth being cautious and avoid disclosing any personal information.

Hello everyone
At the recent Parish Council meeting I was informed of a burglary
this week from a house towards the end of Jarvis Gate (over the
bridge). In addition to jewelry and personal items a 12 bore shotgun
number H57562 was also taken from a gun cabinet. The property was
broken in via the back door, neighbours saw a dark blue BMW and
a blue Transit van parked outside but did not think this was suspicious
at the time. I have spoken with the police and they have all details
on file.
Please pass this on to your members and ask them to contact the
police on 0300 111 0300 if they can offer further information. Please
also be vigilant of these two vehicles especially if seen parked
together near a property and always contact the police IMMEDIATELY. |

| Good evening this is message
from PCSO HARRINGTON of The Suttons Neighbourhood Policing Team.
Between 22:30 on 22/09/2011 and 14:15 23/09/2011 several properties
in the area of The Sidings Long Sutton had lead stolen from their
bay windows. If you saw or heard anything please contact Lincolnshire
Police on 0300 111 0300 quoting incident number 192 23/09/2011.
This message is also designed to bring awareness to other residents
in the villages that are covered by The Suttons that lead is now
being stolen again from residential properties and to check their
lead on a regular basis as well as their neighbours. The other option
is to mark the lead with smartwater and to report suspicious vehicles
when seen to Lincolnshire Police on the above number. |
| Yesterday we informed Lincoln
members of concerns over a missing man, Gary Betteridge from Lincoln.
We would now like to increase the appeal to all members throughout
Lincolnshire.
Gary was last seen in Mansfield on the morning of the 21st at
about 0900 after leaving his home in Lincoln at around 0800. Initial
Police enquiries have so far failed to trace Gary and it is not
known where he may have travelled to after he was seen in Mansfield.
Police are becoming increasingly concerned about Gary.
Gary is said to be in a fragile state of mind and possibly suffering
with depression. Gary may well be in the Mansfield area (where
he was last seen) or the wider Nottinghamshire / Lincolnshire
area as he is not believed to have accessed any money or refuelled
his tank. His vehicle, a white LDV pickup, registration FX54GBF
(picture on Lincolnshire Police website) has bright green lettering
on the sides with the business name "Forrest Tower Fencing".
Searches for this vehicle have so far failed; leading Police to
believe it may be parked up in a lorry park or lay-by.
Anyone with information should call the Police on 0300 111 0300
quoting incident number 421 of the 21st September.
Information will be brought to the attention of Sgt 1117 Mike
Hanson and Sgt 814 Paul Pettit who are investigating the incident.

Good afternoon this is PCSO
Paul Coupland from the Spalding estates police team.
On Friday the 9th June 2011 at approximately 11:45am 2 males attended
a property on Park Road Spalding. These males were dressed as police
officers Hi Vis jacket with the word police on the back, white shirt
black tie, blue or black trousers and black shoes. They had attached
to the front of the jacket a phone made to look like a radio, they
did not wear hats. Both males were white with local accent. Male
1,6ft0 short fair hair medium build, male 2 5ft4 these are the only
physical descriptions given. The taller of the males gave his name
as PC GARFIELD from Spalding station. There is no PC of that name
at Spalding. Theses males did not try to gain entry to the property
instead were in conversation about a fictitious burglary that had
occurred over night. These 2 males have again engaged in conversation
with a member of the public on the foot bridge over the railway
from Parkside Crescent to Kings Road. The nature of the conversation
was that a mugging had taken place on the bridge, this was not the
case .They were still in the police type uniform. It is unclear,
at this stage, what the motivation is for these 2 males. Do they
get a kick at pretending to be police?
If anyone has seen a pair matching the above description or has
any further information that could assist police in this incident
please contact us on 0300 111 0300 quoting inc number 263 9/9/11

Hello this is a message from
PCSO Ian Cripps from Holbeach Neighbourhood Policing Team. It is
Wednesday 24th August 2011.
As the harvest season continues into ploughing & planting we
are starting to get complaints from residents & motorists regarding
the speed that tractors especially those carting trailers are moving
around the villages & countryside.
I would be grateful if you can remind your drivers that they are
subject to speed restrictions as are other motorists, and that if
they have a line of vehicles behind them they are obliged to pull
over to allow traffic to pass, also when leaving a muddy field the
are also obliged to remove mud from their tyres before entering
a highway.
Please report any suspicious vehicles or activity to us especially
in the rural areas where residents and businesses are more vulnerable
on 0300 111 0300
Thank you for your help in this matter

Taxpayers see £4000 float away....... 21/08/2011 21:34:21
[2961]
Hello
There were some temporary traffic lights on the B1165 between
Sutton St James and 'Saturday Bridge' (the junction with the B1168).
There "were some traffic lights" because some thoughtful
person has thrown them into the large drain that runs alongside
the road.
The lights were there to protect part of the road that is subsiding
- a car recently left the road at that point and ended up in the
water. It's understandable that some motorists may wonder why
the traffic lights appeared to be serving no purpose, but they
were there for that reason.
The lights, and a number of cones, that are now submerged in
the water will cost £4000 to replace. They are owned by
the Highways Agency ie. funded by the tax payer.
Do you have any information that may help me identify who is
responsible? Did you see anything? Have you heard anything from
family or friends?
If you have any useful information please call the control room.
It's a free number - 0300 111 0300. The reference number is 32110039272

Watchline message from Lincolnshire
Police, Community Safety Department,
Wednesday 10th August 2011.
In light of the public order issues that have recently occurred
within various towns and cities throughout England, it is important
that we monitor closely and report any activity or information
which suggests there may be even the slightest risk of issues
arising within Lincolnshire - early warning and early preparation
are key tools for the
police in dealing effectively with subsequent disorder.
Fortunately Lincolnshire has not received any direct threats,
however if you receive any information, come across any community
tension or any risk of disorder then please contact Lincolnshire
Police on 0300 111 0300. Thank you.

July 2011
|
| Good morning, this is a message
from Gillian Fleet at Lincolnshire Police HQ.
This message has been generated by Nottinghamshire Police, and
sent to you for information purposes.
Police are appealing for the publics help to find six horses
stolen from a paddock in Calverton.
The animals were taken from a field in Whinbush Lane between
5pm on Friday 8 July and 9am on Saturday 9 July.
It is believed the culprits gained access by breaking the lock
to the field and then made off with the horses, possibly using
one or two horse boxes to transport them.
The animals feeding and water troughs were also taken.
The driver of a red 4x4 vehicle towing an old, white horse box,
seen parked near the field around the time of the theft may have
vital information about the incident.
The horses are:
Romana, a chestnut mare, aged 26
Revel, a grey mare, aged 21
Gem, a bay mare, aged 3
Bow, a red and white filly, aged 1
Zeus, a palomino filly, aged 1
Foxy, a bay mare, aged 6
Police believe those responsible may attempt to sell the horses.
They may have been sold at local horse markets or even as working
horses, possibly in the Newark or Bingham areas.
PC Luke Todd, who is investigating the incident, said: Its
likely the thieves will try and make a profit by selling these
animals on to unsuspecting buyers.
But the horses are stolen property and belong to somebody
else. Their owners are understandably distressed and very concerned
for the welfare of their animals.
I urge anyone who comes into contact with horses in their
day-to-day lives or at local markets to be observant.
They should contact the police if they know where the stolen
horses are or if they have any information that could help us
reunite them with their rightful owners.
Anyone with information should contact Nottinghamshire Police
on 0300 300 99 99 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555

Message sent by
Marion Lewis OBE (NHWN, Regional Representative, East Midlands)
Figures released today by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) show
that home improvements continue to top the list of complaints
about doorstep rogue traders. The OFT is today urging consumers,
especially the elderly and vulnerable, to be on their guard against
rogue traders knocking at their door.
Last year, Consumer Direct received more than 13,000 complaints
about uninvited traders and almost half of these complaints (5,718)
related to home maintenance work. The top five complaints about
this group in 2010 were:
· Roofing 1725 (30%)
· Tarmacing and paving 1088 (19%)
· Insulation 663 (12%)
· General building work 573 (10%)
· Burglar alarms 348 (6%)
With complaints about home maintenance peaking in the summer months
from July through to the autumn, the OFT is launching an awareness
campaign urging householders to be cautious and take time to think
about people who call at the door. Rogue doorstep traders will
often offer services at attractive rates and use persuasive sales
techniques to encourage people into making hasty decisions.
Michele Shambrook Deputy Operations Manager at Consumer Direct
said:
It is not illegal for handymen to canvas for work, but it
is important that people are cautious and do not make hasty decisions.
Rogue doorstep trading is an ongoing problem in the UK and work
or service carried out can sometimes be unnecessary, of a poor
standard, much more expensive than originally quoted or not done
at all.
This campaign is helping people to recognise the warning
signs, so that they have the confidence to say no if theyre
unsure about what is being offered.
Jim Maddan, Chair of Neighbourhood and Home Watch for England
& Wales said:
We are supporting this campaign because its important
that people feel safe in their homes and understand the tactics
used by conmen. These types of rogue traders will try to find
common ground with a homeowner and use deceptive and misleading
claims. Some may falsely claim to be endorsed by a trade association
or a local council. It is important that people have the confidence
to say no to doorstep traders and take the time to think about
the service being offered.
The OFT offers the following advice on how people can avoid being
scammed by rogue doorstep traders:
· If a trader knocks at your door do not agree to on the
spot house repairs, or sign anything on the spot.
· Be wary of special offers or warnings that your house
is unsafe.
· Do not make snap decisions. Take time to talk to someone
you trust before you make a decision.
· If in doubt, call Consumer Direct on 08454 040506 or
visit www.direct.gov.uk/consumer
We hope that you have found this information useful. Thank you

There have been some recent reports of car number plate cloning
fraud. This is where criminals will fit a car with a 'clone' of
your number plate so that if their car is involved in an accident
or an offence such as speeding, your car ends up 'taking the blame'
for the incident. This could result in heavy financial losses
or even criminal charges. You can read more here at the This Is
Money website: http://bit.ly/kYFSgC
Drivers who have number plates stolen or cloned should report
the crime immediately to the police. Those who receive unexplained
speeding or parking tickets should contact the issuing authority
promptly.
Drivers who fall victim more than once should ask the Driver
and Vehicle Licensing Agency if they can re-register their car
with a new number.

| Watchline message from Lincolnshire
Police, Community Safety Department, 15th June 2011 on behlaf of
Lincolnshire Trading Standards.
Trading Standards is still receiving complaints about cold calls
from companies claiming to have detected that your computer is
running slowly because of an infection by some sort of virus,
'trojan' or malware....
The general pattern of complaints suggests that the cold callers
usually claim to be Microsoft engineers or from your Internet
Service Provider (ISP) and offer to resolve the problem by remotely
accessing your computer.
By doing this, they could gain access to your personal information
such as passwords, bank details and emails. Complaints suggest
they are misleading consumers and in some cases they are acting
aggressively, threatening to infect your PC or simply being abusive.
We have had reports of worried complainants paying fees approaching
£200 for these 'services'.
Remember:
These cold callers need your help to get remote access to your
PC by directing you to a specific web address.
Microsoft do not cold call customers!
Online scammers are using increasingly more deceptive and underhand
ways of convincing unsuspecting consumers that their sites and
offers are genuine. If a website requires information such as
credit or debit card details, ensure they have a real phone number
and address so you can get in touch with them if something goes
wrong. Using tried and tested websites to make purchases online
generally gives you better protection, and always ensure your
own computer has adequate security software.
